Having lived in the Detroit metro area for the last 11 years, I have accumulated a list of favorite restaurants.
Pizza place: Pizzapopolis (Greektown) - this stuff is heavy and good. I consider the deep dish pizza they offer to be almost as good as Gino's in Chicago. It takes a while for the pizza to be baked so this is not the place for dinner if you're in a hurry, and make sure you eat salad for the rest of the week to get your cholesterol back down.
Mexican: Mexican Village (not in Mexican town) - great cheap fast food, right next to a tortilla factory. Their chips and salsa are much better than the over-rated Xochimoco's and the atmosphere is decent without the restaurant being too large or overwhelming.
Ethnic: Blue Nile (Ehtiopian in Greektown) - there is an absence of much good Asian ethnic food such as Thai or Indian, so Ethiopian is almost as good as Indian. Some of it is less spicy and you eat family style, sharing the plate with all the dishes. You use pieces of a spongy bread to grab the main course items. Some of the dishes are cold (intentionally and others are just like Indian with less masala), but it's great for a change of pace. Prices are kind of expensive, although I believe it's all you can eat.
More to come...
