Ray on Detroit Wonk made a nice post about recent cuts at BBDO, an ad agency for DaimlerChrysler. His point is that job cuts at the Big Three directly or indirectly affect us all in our local economy. So to this, I say, if you live in the area, buy from the Big Three. All the financial guys, doctors, lawyers whose clients are well-paid employees come predominantly from one of the Big Three companies are shooting themselves in the foot by buying outside of the Big Three's portfolio of products. The well-paying jobs with good benefits are leaving Detroit, probably never to return. There will be less of a potential customer base for many industries. Another consideration is home prices which are not doing well locally amidst all the job cuts.
I'm not advocating buying from the Big 3 blindly, but at least give their products consideration. They really have made strides on safety, performance, quality, and design. Take a test drive. There are a wide variety of offerings from Chevy to Dodge to Ford to Jaguar, Volvo, Saab, Cadillac, Mercedes. All of these fall under the corporate umbrellas of the Big 3 so the profit feeds into the companies that employ so many people here.
