The Detroit News reported today that four elementary schools had to close today because 800 teachers called in sick in protest. As many as 1500 teachers planned to call in sick today because the teachers had lent 5 days pay to the ailing district, but at the same time, principals' salaries are getting a bump up 4.7% to 10.6%. Administrators say that the pay increase is needed to keep and attract principals, who took a pay cut of 10% last school year.
In the end, it is the students who are missing class today that lose out. It's sad this cannot be worked out, but I do see the teachers' point in a sick out. Their families are also suffering from a pay cut.
