Saturday night, Detroit Essentials had a fabulous time hanging out in the D. Our night began with a half-hour of parking spot hunting. (Of course, it didn't help that all three of us decided to drive ourselves and meet downtown.) I thought I would park at the Greektown Casino parking garage and get my ticket validated in the casino, but that was nixed when the lot was full. So plan B, I called Atul for parking tips and he gave me the best tip of all. I pondered whether I would share this with you or not since I don't want my prime parking to get full, but I'm in the sharing mood. Tip #1, from Monroe, if you turn left on St. Antoine and turn right on Clinton, there is usually plenty of street parking. All three of us were able to park there. This location is in walking distance of Greek Town and it's free!
We tried to have a Greek dinner at Pegasus, but to our despair, the wait was 1-2 hours long! Here's tip #2. Go across the street to Hellas. They've got great food and the wait isn't as long. They don't take reservations, so you have to wait in line, but if you end up waiting outside like we did, there are heating lamps above to keep you warm. The authentic Greek food was tasty, and the saganaki (cheese fired with liquor) was on fire!
After dinner we enjoyed a few drinks at Pulse. It's a modern contemporary lounge but has a laid back type of feel. Comfy couches and a cool looking bar adorn the space. Great art work and color schemes fill the walls. The drinks were imaginative and tasty with names like the Mustang, Push-up, and a traditional Sidecar. We had the pleasure to talk to one of the owners Joseph Ross who informed us that opening this bar has been a lifelong dream for him and the other owners. As their first venture, I think they got the mood, location, and feel right. If you are in Detroit looking for a smooth lounge, head to Pulse.
In the end, we had a great night. Hanging out in Detroit is a nice alternative to the typical Royal Oak and Ann Arbor scene. This is just a reminder to everyone that there is still life in Detroit after the Super Bowl. Tip #3 is to go out and enjoy it!
