Whether you're driving in the city or in the country, this car is a great SUV alternative. It has all-wheel-drive but handles better, accelerates and stops more competently and returns better fuel economy. It even has more cargo volume than many crossovers and SUV's including the BMW X5 of the same year! The German solidity can be felt the moment you close the door and start driving. Its powerful inline six cylinder provides a little extra oomph but still allows you to get 30 mpg on the highway under the right conditions and driving.

As for safety, the 2004-2010 BMW 5 Series earns good marks from the government, with 5 out 5 stars in all but the driver's frontal crash test, which earned only 3 out of 5 stars (2009 model tested).
