So here's an article on Newsweek about how the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin won't get the global publicity that the 2006 Soccer World Cup (in Germany) will get. That got me thinking, and then thinking off on a tangent that Americans don't appreciate soccer like the rest of the world. So that means we as a sports culture are weird. I am a soccer fan, player, so I appreciate the World Cup as the sports spectable with perhaps the most global impact. On the other hand, typical Americans look down upon people like me because I'm "weird" in the context of American culture. They just don't get soccer. "It's too slow," they say. "What good is a sport if you can't use your hands?" they also say. Well, maybe it's time we started appreciating other aspects of sports besides scoring, like great passes and good defensive play. Somehow, baseball escapes much of this scrutiny for being slow. I do have a feeling that its popularity is declining as well. That's because we as a culture want instant gratification.

Back to the Winter Olympics, I'll watch some of the coverage of the Winter Games, but I'll be watching on CBC (Canadian TV) whenever possible. Their coverage is not so 'Americentric'.
