New roundtable blogger Prego, from Buffalo, takes his first turn with a roundtable post. In his post at Rustbelt Ramblings, expresses his displeasure with the way we all dress. According to him, we might as well just wear rags. And some of us actually do. Prego says we should be more "proper" with the way we dress. I give my piece with a comment so have a visit and offer up your opinion too. If you're a 24-hour-a-day sweatpants person, stick up for yourself!

"Engineer? Why would you want to be an engineer?"
I've heard this said before and it really irks me. Comments like this are evidence that engineers don't get any respect even though they arguably perform some of the most important functions in our technologically based society. Engineers make your current lifestyle possible.
- Your house? An engineer designed it to keep it strong and to protect you from the elements.
- You start you car... Engineers designed it to work and get you around while coddling you.
- You go to work and turn on your computer designed by engineers which runs on software designed by engineers.
- Your medicine gets to you thanks to engineers who figure out how to manufacture and package it.
- That movie you watch is a great experience thanks in part to engineers who have made it realistic.
- Your MP3 player?... You get the picture, or should I say you get the song?
Of course, this is just a sampling, and surely it's an oversimplification, but it's about time engineers get credit. I have to admit that I'm a little biased because I used to be an engineer and my father is a retired one. Think about the fact that doctors get credit for saving lives, but it's a civil engineers get no credit whatsoever. One mistake by a doctor and one person dies; one mistake by a civil engineer and thousands could die. In the automotive world, an engineer developing air bags potentially saves thousands of lives over time, accident-by-accident.
Remember that engineers are people who have completed math courses beyond calculus, and they have passed many a physics course. Only a small percentage of the population can do this. All that I ask is that you give engineers the respect they deserve. They make your life safer, more fun, and more convenient. So what if some of them are nerdy?

Has Tom Cruise always been this weird? It all started with that maniacal display on the Oprah Winfrey Show, and the hits keep on coming. See Joe's take on it in his blog appropriately titled "Hairshirt" for this week's Roundtable post. (Note that there is repetitive use of foul language in his post, so keep the kids eyes off the screen.) Katie Holmes has hopefully not turned this weird, but then if she hasn't, she should probably leave him or face an uncomfortable relationship and future marriage. Perhaps Tom is actually a (smart) normal guy who is using fake weirdness to promote himself as a brand. This could all be one big publicity stunt. Who is his agent?

I usually don't talk about specifics in my life on my blog, but this is a landmark time in my life. I am done done done with my MBA! I began the University of Michigan Evening MBA, (focused in marketing), in early September of 2002. Four years and nine months and a huge donation from a guy named Ross later, I realize that earning the degree has been a journey in which I learned so much, struggled to balance my life, family, friends, hobbies, and work. I jokingly say that the Evening MBA "ruined my life," but it definitely enriched my life more than it took away from it. I figure that I spent thousands of dollars in tuition, tens of thousands of extra miles of driving, 2,000+ hours of time, but I got it done and it was all worth it. Commencement is a week from Friday.
Now that I don't have classes and homework, I almost feel guilty for having extra time with which to live my life. The best part is that I now have more time to spend with family and friends, partake in hobbies, read for leisure, take better care of myself, my cars, and my house. I think I'll send an explanation/apology letter to all my friends and relatives who have not heard from me in a long time. Now my favorite excuse is gone though; I can't say that I have class or homework or a group meeting. For all you blog readers of "Things I've Noticed", expect more posts from me, a redesign, and a bit more of a focus on comedy.
